The Giant Goram

The Giant Goram, currently closed, is our last remaining public house on the, relatively isolated, Lawrence Weston estate in North-West Bristol.  Originally, we had five.  Since 2007, four others have been lost, demolished to be replaced by flats and housing.

Currently registered as an Asset of Community Value, (ACV), the Giant Goram was built in 1959 to serve the then new post-war housing estate of Lawrence Weston.

It features two bars, a skittle alley, a large cellar, as well as accommodation on the first floor.  It is a classic late-1950’s ‘estate’ design and is the last remaining architectural example in Bristol.  This has led to it being “Locally Listed” on the Bristol Register of Valued Buildings.

Community significance and future potential

Closed in November 2019 and sold to property developers, the pub remains shut up and neglected and has been subject to a succession of Planning Applications and Appeals, all so far being successfully resisted with firm direction from the Planning Authorities that it should continue as a public house.

Recently the pub had a survey by a valuer from the Plunkett Foundation, They assessed it as structurally sound but in need of serious work to refurbish and re-open it — a task judged “very do-able”.

It is the last serious amenity, in a part of the estate badly lacking in amenities, and is sorely needed back open and serving the community.

We think there is potential for the pub to attract a wide range of customers, given the cycling and walking routes nearby.

Location & surrounding area

The pub is on bus routes 3 & 4 through Lawrence Weston, and a further 150m to National Cycle Route N41 with a regional-standard BMX track recently upgraded by Sport England, and the site planned for the Bristol Family Cycling Centre on the Lawrence Weston Greenway.  A walking route 400m south will take you into the open woodlands of the Kings Weston Estate with the recently restored John Vanbrugh 18th century Kings Weston House and the Severn Way long distance footpath.
